FOX 11 Murder suspect leads police pursuit through Los Angeles The Los Angeles Police Department was in pursuit of a murder suspect in South LA. The suspect recklessly drove through city streets by driving on the wrong side of the road, nearly colliding with other vehicles while cutting through red lights. After weaving through traffic, the suspect entered the 110 Freeway and cut off other drivers to get onto the left shoulder. He sped past traffic at roughly 95 to 100 mph. The driver sideswiped a wall and partially sheared off the car's rear bumper. Despite the collision and the now-dragging rear bumper, the suspect continued to reach speeds as high as 100 mph while weaving past traffic. The California Highway Patrol took over the pursuit and used a spike strip to puncture the suspect's tires shortly after the crash. The driver quickly exited the freeway in Compton and continued to evade police, but at a much slower pace. Police considered using a PIT maneuver to end the pursuit, but refrained from it after learning the suspect could have been armed. Southern California man ran meth ring from prison A Santa Paula man already serving a de facto life sentence received another sentence of 35 years to life after he was caught orchestrating the transportation and sale of methamphetamine. Omar Hernandez Ruiz, 38, pleaded guilty on Aug. 18 to a felony count of conspiracy to transport or sell methamphetamine, as well as special allegations and aggravating factors including previous convictions for felonies and association with a gang, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release. “Ruiz, a prison gang member, was incarcerated at the California State Prison, Centinela at the time of these crimes,” the release said. “He is already serving 156 years to life in prison for a 2013 Santa Paula murder and assault on a peace officer.” The additional decades in prison date to September through November 2024, when Ruiz “coordinated from prison the transportation of high quantities of drugs utilizing several co-conspirators,” prosecutors said. That scheme was halted on Nov. 14, 2024, when 9 pounds of meth was found in the possession of a woman who was allegedly a runner for Ruiz. KTLA 5 BWC: Driver accelerates toward California officer, striking him before fleeing The Modesto Police Department released body camera footage showing an incident where a suspect drove toward an officer, striking him as the officer fired shots, KCRA reported. According to Police Chief Brandon Gillespie, the incident began on Aug. 8 when a woman reported that someone in a black Acura had driven by her home twice and fired a gun. The suspect was reportedly dating the woman’s granddaughter at the time. Officer Jesus Padilla, patrolling nearby, spotted a black Acura matching the description. Bodycam footage released on Sept. 17 shows Padilla exiting his patrol car and aiming his weapon at the vehicle. The suspect then accelerated toward him, prompting Padilla to fire nine shots. The suspect struck Padilla’s leg with the vehicle before fleeing. Shortly after, a Stanislaus County Sheriff’s sergeant spotted the suspect’s vehicle and pursued him. The suspect ran a red light, crashed while attempting to enter a highway and fled on foot into nearby brush. A perimeter was established, and drones and air support were deployed. A drone located the suspect hiding in the bushes along the freeway median. Officers inside an armored vehicle approached the suspect and issued commands, which he ignored. CBS 2 Local Government News Council to Vote on Los Angeles Convention Center Expansion Project The Los Angeles City Council is expected to vote Friday on whether to move forward on the Convention Center Expansion Project amid rising overhead costs and concerns about meeting a deadline to ensure the venue is ready for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson is expected to host a news conference at 8 a.m. outside of City Hall — alongside his colleagues Tim McOsker, Heather Hutt, Curren Price, Ysabel Jurado and Adrin Nazarian — to advocate for the expansion project. They will be joined by a coalition of business, labor groups and community members lobbying for the new facility. On Thursday, Mayor Karen Bass endorsed the full expansion and modernization of the downtown Convention Center. The mayor publicly called for the expansion of the Convention Center in her past two State of the City addresses, citing the need to catalyze change in downtown and the entire city by bringing in more visitors to restaurants, hotels, stores and other attractions. However, top city advisors have warned that moving forward with the full expansion could pose many risks, including the loss of the site as an Olympic venue if it were to miss a readiness date by March 31, 2028.
