We saw this playbook unfold in rapid succession this week. After pressure from government officials, ABC suspended late-night host Jimmy Kimmel's show. Trump celebrated the move and suggested that FCC licenses should be pulled from any network whose on-air talent dares to criticize him. At the same time, members of the administration publicly encouraged followers to "rat out" anyone who posted anything negative about the passing of Charlie Kirk to their employers. As a result, countless Americans have been fired from their jobs for simply expressing their opinions
The administration is working to control not just what you say, but what you know. By withholding government data and public records, they prevent us from independently verifying official claims or understanding the real state of their economy, health, or society.. By manipulating what we see and know—and what we are never allowed to see—fascist regimes can manufacture a false reality and enforce total ideological control. This is what it looks like when democracy begins to die in darkness.
The moves we're watching in real-time
These are not isolated incidents—they are part of a coordinated effort:
The Federal Communications Commission: After years of championing free speech, the FCC has threatened to pull licenses from networks whose coverage of the president is deemed too critical.
Controlling the Economy: Plans have been announced to end quarterly reports by public companies and clamp down on the release of jobs data. This isn't just a policy change; it's a direct effort to suppress facts about the economy and prevent you from understanding the real state of our financial health.
Hiding the Evidence: The administration has quietly removed from DOJ websites statistics proving that right-wing extremist violence is the nation’s biggest domestic threat, all while using a manufactured narrative about political violence to demonize opponents.
The Epstein Cover-Up: The administration continues to spread lies and distractions about the Epstein case to divert attention from congressional reviews of key documents.
This is a dangerous path. It is a playbook ripped from the pages of fascist regimes that weaponize information to maintain control, filling the airwaves with state-approved propaganda and silencing dissent.
The Good News
This blatant overreach is a wake-up call, and it’s backfiring on Trump. True conservative voices and MAGA Republicans are also rising up, speaking up and pushing back. Some right-wing influencers are speaking up and even defending Jimmy Kimmel—and arguing for the need to protect our free speech and rights under the rule of law.
It’s clear. The current administration lacks the widespread support for these actions that we saw during past crackdowns on speech—like during McCarthyism and post-9/11. While some corporate-owned news may bend to pressure, other media and civil liberties organizations are ready to fight back in court.
