Trump and his allies in Congress are determined to sacrifice our nation’s health and well-being. As a short-term funding bill is being debated in the Senate, countless essential services and programs that protect our food and water are on the line.

Here’s what’s at stake: Trump has proposed slashing almost 90% of water funding, removing $5 billion from the EPA, and threatening programs that keep drinking water safe and affordable for families across the country. The Republican spending bill also underfunds WIC nutritional assistance by $600 million, which could take food away from nearly half a million young children and new parents over the year.

On Friday, the House of Representatives passed this dangerous spending vision along mostly party lines. With the funding bill now in the Senate, this is our best chance to stop these cuts.

And our strategy is working – Democrats in the House and Senate have offered a counter-proposal to keep the government open, fully fund food assistance for young children and new parents, protect access to healthcare, and prohibit the use of sneaky backdoor tactics to revoke already-approved funding for clean water and other essential programs.

This is exactly what we’ve been pushing for – and it’s proof that we can win this fight. This backdoor process was already used to cut funding for PBS and NPR, and House Republicans have said they want to use it to enact further cuts directed by Trump.
