Dear Green American,

Every day, fast fashion behemoth Shein adds thousands of new styles to its website and app. By the end of the year, Americans will add 17 million tons of all these textiles to the landfill ([link removed])—piles and piles of clothing from Shein and its competitors -- the equivalent of 170 aircraft carriers. On Monday, New York Fashion Week flaunted Shein and partner Claude Russell with their own show.

We can and must demand better from the fashion industry.

The endless production of apparel endangers us all, especially the women working tirelessly in other countries to meet a demand that doesn’t need to exist. We live in a world of abundance, where wages, safe working conditions, and nontoxic clothing should not be compromised.

Though New York Fashion Week ended yesterday, this is not the end. Tomorrow, the dizzying event of runways and the latest in design travels across the pond for London Fashion Week.
