This October, celebrate Texas Archeology Month (TAM) at the THC's state historic sites. TAM is a statewide initiative that honors the rich and diverse heritage of Texas through archeological exploration. Throughout the month, a variety of activities, events, and educational programs will be available at select sites:

Join Us at the Texas Archeology Fair

Join the Texas Historical Commission and the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin for the Texas Archeology Fair, a free family festival celebrating Texas archeology, heritage, and cultures.

As part of H-E-B Free First Sunday, visitors of all ages can enjoy hands-on activities, games, crafts, artifact displays, and demonstrations from archeologists, historians, and community groups across the state. Explore both the museum and Lone Star Plaza with interactive booths, atlatl throwing, and opportunities to learn directly from cultural heritage experts.

Explore archeology with hands-on activities, site tours, and presentations designed for kids and adults. Complete fun challenges like mock excavations and artifact analysis to earn stamps in your field notebook and win a junior archeologist prize.

*October 25, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.*

Dive into a hands-on archeology experience with mock digs, games, and pottery puzzles for the whole family. Enjoy activities hosted by local museums and heritage groups, with house tours available at regular admission prices.

Hogg-tober Fest [ [link removed] ]

*October 4, 2–9 p.m.*

Celebrate Brazoria County's cowboy history at this year’s Hogg-tober Fest [ [link removed] ]! The spotlight is on head foreman Hal Fields, who began working on the Varner-Hogg Plantation [ [link removed] ] in 1917, with cowboy demonstrations, games, live music, food, local brews, and more fun for all ages.

*October 10-11, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.*

Step back into frontier life at Fort Griffin Living History Days [ [link removed] ]! Living historians will bring the Texas frontier to life with chuckwagons, longhorns, drills, and demonstrations. Friday is a special school day, while Saturday opens to the public with added music, food trucks, and the Texas Forts Trail wine festival.

The San Jacinto Fall Fandango [ [link removed] ] invites you to relive the lively gatherings of the 1830s, when neighbors from miles apart came together to celebrate. This free family event brings frontier life to the monument grounds with living history activities, saloon games, heritage artisans, cooking demonstrations, vendors, and more.

Washington-on-the-Brazos Grand Re-Opening

Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site [ [link removed] ], known as the birthplace of Texas, will reopen on *November 8* following an intensive renovation. The site will feature a fully renovated visitor center, an expanded Star of the Republic Museum with interactive exhibits and theaters, and a recreated Washington townsite experience that brings 1836 Texas history to life.
