Hi John,

Environment Colorado and our coalition partners and allies just delivered nearly 500,000 public comments to help save 45 million acres of forests from the chopping block.

Thank you! My team and I couldn't have activated all of these forest defenders without your help. My name is Ellen Montgomery, and I'm the director of Environment Colorado's Great Outdoors Campaign.

I've been part of our campaigns to protect America's last wild places for more than 25 years. One of my proudest accomplishments was winning the Roadless Rule in 2001.

From the Tongass National Forest to the White Mountain National Forest, the Roadless Rule has protected wild forests from commercial logging, strip mining and road-building. Just three weeks ago, the Forest Service announced plans to revoke these protections in 45 million acres of our national forests.

When I found out, I was outraged. But years of grassroots organizing has taught me that all we needed was a plan and a group of passionate people just like you.

To save these forests, we needed to demonstrate that people across the political spectrum love these places for their natural beauty and amazing opportunities for recreation.

I knew that we could build a broad coalition of people from all walks of life who support protecting our last wild forests. It's been a busy three weeks, but we've accomplished so much.

We joined forces with dozens of organizations across the country to stand up for our forests, holding panel discussions and visiting some of the forests that are at risk.

We pitched national reporters and called up local newspapers to get the word out in the media.

We ran ads and shared on social media to reach new people.

And with the voices of supporters like you, Environment Colorado and our allies generated nearly 500,000 public comments to the Forest Service.

But we're not done yet. If the Forest Service finalizes its plans, it would set our forests back decades, destroying habitat for wildlife and the trees we love.

Even though this three-week public comment period is coming to a close, we know that this can't be the last time we speak up for the trees. Next, we'll be working to convince key elected officials to weigh in with the Forest Service and defend the wild forests we love.

I hope you'll join us to defend our forests in the months ahead.

Thank you,

Ellen Montgomery
Great Outdoors Campaign Director
