John —

Attorney General Bill Barr is blatantly attacking our mission and trying
to spread fear about justice reform. He’s spouting false claims that
district attorneys working to end mass incarceration will lead to “more
crime, more victims.” But the facts prove the opposite. Now is a critical
moment to push back.

Here are the facts: between 2007 and 2017, 34 states reduced both rates of
incarceration and crime. Research shows that time in jail and prison can
actually increase the risk of reoffense after release and does nothing to
improve public safety.

We can’t take this attack from the Trump Administration silently. Now is
the time to double down on our mission to elect district attorneys who
will end mass incarceration.

If you look closer, Barr’s motives seem deeply disturbing. Barr’s
statement is more about policing, and his and Trump’s need to protect
police at the cost of people of color and low-income communities. At a
time when police rarely face the consequences for murdering innocent
people, violating their own policies, and abusing their power, we can’t
let this slide.

District attorneys have more power than any other elected position over
the justice system. They choose who and what cases to prosecute. They
choose who and what cases to prosecute. Those decisions can either
perpetuate mass incarceration and abuses of power — or can stop these
problems.

By focusing on these district attorney races, we can end mass
incarceration, including cash bail and the criminalization of poverty, the
war on drugs, and much more. And we can elect district attorneys who will
hold police accountable. By doing so, our communities will be safer.

We’ve already helped elect eight reform-minded district attorneys who are
blazing the way to transform the justice system from the inside out. We’ve
got our eyes on 100 more, but we need your help.
