activist, legal permanent U.S. resident, and father who is being targeted
for his peaceful activism supporting Palestinian rights and protesting war
on Columbia University’s campus.
A Louisiana immigration judge just ruled that Mahmoud should be deported
to Syria or Algeria. This decision comes after ICE forcibly arrested and
detained Mahmoud for months simply for exercising his freedom of speech.
[ [link removed] ]NBC News: Immigration judge orders Mahmoud Khalil to be deported to
Algeria or Syria. “It is no surprise that the Trump administration
continues to retaliate against me for my exercise of free speech,” Khalil,
a former Columbia University grad student, said in a statement.
The Trump administration is using a minor, alleged mistake on Mahmoud’s
green card paperwork to make an example out of him and tear him away from
his family.
Make no mistake: this is retaliation.
This ruling is part of a growing pattern of Trump targeting activists and
weaponizing the courts to undermine our fundamental rights.
While another court has temporarily halted Mahmoud’s deportation as his
case moves forward, the threat remains real — and this administration is
doubling down on its dangerous crackdown on dissent.
We cannot stay silent. Deporting Mahmoud would send a chilling message to
anyone who dares to protest or speak out in defense of justice.
