Not a day seems to go by without a new revelation about how Attorney General Bill Barr is compromising the Department of Justice’s independence and dismantling the rule of law. In advance of his hearing before the House Judiciary Committee last week, Alliance for Justice issued a new report to arm legislators, media, and the public with a comprehensive catalog of Barr’s abuses of power, “William Barr: Eroding Justice.” The report makes clear that Barr has done irreparable damage to the independence of the DOJ and our civil rights, and we call on him to resign. It includes the many ways he has used the office of attorney general to perform personal favors for President Trump and undermine rights and protections critical to millions of Americans. - The report details his cover-up of the Mueller investigation’s findings, the many ways he’s arranged leniency for Trump’s friends Roger Stone and Michael Flynn and the myriad other instances in which Barr has undermined independence of DOJ to protect Donald Trump’s illegality and corruption.
- Barr has eroded civil rights and critical legal protections. He commandeered military forces to attack peaceful protesters in Lafayette Square using rubber bullets, tear gas, and stun grenades to make way for the president’s photo op. He has derailed efforts to ensure constitutional policy and a more racially just criminal justice system. He has failed to enforce the Voting Rights Act, and indeed has fought to make it harder to vote. He has eroded protections for women, LGBTQ Americans, immigrants, clean air and clean water, the environment, and consumers.
- Barr has argued the entire Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional, threatening the health of millions. In the middle of a pandemic, he has failed to protect the health of people in federal custody and attacked state and local officials’ efforts to protect the health of their communities.
