Email from Contigo Immigration Justice Calls to action and shared victories! September 2025 Denouncing Cruelty at the Border a Statement from Miles Tokunow, Executive Director, Contigo Immigrant Justice "Fort Bliss has a long, shameful history of incarcerating marginalized communities. It was first used as an internment site for Japanese Americans during World War II. In more recent decades, it has served as a detention center under the Obama, Biden, and Trump administrations, imprisoning immigrant children in horrifying conditions. This facility is not an anomaly. It is part of a nearly century-long legacy of government-sanctioned abuse. A recent Washington Post investigation uncovered at least 60 federal violations in just 50 days at the Fort Bliss Immigration Detention Center. These include denial of legal access, substandard medical care, and inhumane living conditions. These are not new horrors; they are part of a continuous, deplorable tradition. My own family knows the lasting trauma that detention inflicts. My father was born behind barbed wire in a U.S. internment camp in 1943. That legacy lives in me, and in every person forced into cages under the guise of civil immigration enforcement. At Contigo Immigrant Justice, we believe in the fundamental dignity of all human beings. Immigrant detention is a gross and unacceptable violation of universal human rights. We demand the immediate closure of the Fort Bliss Immigration Detention Center and an end to the cruel practice of immigrant detention in the United States."   Migrants were locked up in temporary detention facility at Fort Bliss despite 60 violations of federal standards, inspectors find. READ MORE HERE   The Supreme Court’s recent ruling enabling ICE agents to racially profile members in our community is complete and utter abomination of justice and a betrayal of universal human values. The Supreme Court’s right-wing extremist majority is firmly on the wrong side of history and in gross violation of their oaths to uphold the constitution of the United States. They continue, along with the Republican controlled congress, to condone and enable the Trump administration’s unprecedented seizure of unilateral power at the expense of the People. This ruling cannot be met with silence. We urge our communities and allies to transform outrage into action: demand accountability from elected officials, stand in solidarity with immigrant neighbors, and support the organizations on the frontlines of this struggle. Together, we can dismantle oppression and build a future rooted in dignity, justice, and liberation. Reach out to your senator today to put pressure on the administration to halt deportations and racist attacks on our communities. Tell your Senator and Representative NO MORE money for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).   The Fronterizx Fianza Fund For the first time since taking over the Fianza Fund we have been able to post a bond to get someone out of detention and reunite a family! Join us at our Annual Gala on Wednesday, November 13 at the Eldorado Hotel in Santa Fe. Together, we will celebrate victories, honor our communities, and build momentum for the fights ahead. Contigo!
