Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel has been fired, reportedly under pressure from Donald Trump’s FCC chair, for doing the one thing this administration can’t stand:

Criticizing Donald Trump. 

This is about control. Trump is using the federal government to punish people who speak out. First it was NPR and PBS. Now it's late-night television.

We’ve seen this before, both here and in other countries. Silence the press. Target election officials. Eliminate anyone who refuses to fall in line.

Democratic Secretaries of State have stood up to Trump’s power grabs, and they know the stakes. As Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes put it:

“Trump has no business interfering in state voting laws.”

He has no business interfering in free speech either.

Freedom of speech is not just a line in the Constitution. Our First Amendment is a guardrail against authoritarianism. When a president punishes public voices for dissent or criticism, we lose one of the last defenses of democracy.

Kimmel is just the latest example. But if this is allowed to stand, he won’t be the last.
