John,
Look no further than how desperately Trump and Republicans are trying to redraw maps and steal power ahead of the 2026 elections to understand just how critical the midterms are.
2025 has given new meaning to our tried-and-true adage that “there are no off years in redistricting.” Trump and the GOP have been relentlessly pulling every possible lever to tip the map in their favor and gain an unfair, unearned advantage in next year’s election.
Meanwhile, we know that the future of our democracy hangs in the balance in critical state-level elections. The NDRC has identified 13 states in which we plan to do everything we can to elect pro-democracy leaders in key elections over the next two years — while pushing back on Republican attempts to silence millions of voters.
The NDRC’s unique mix of data-driven mapping, political analysis, and redistricting experience — combined with the fair maps movement’s responsive grassroots organizing and legal strategy — makes us a powerhouse fighting for fair maps. And right now, we’re facing down the toughest fights we’ve seen.
With the 2025 and 2026 elections looming and democracy hanging in the balance, make a donation to power our work today. Your generosity will fuel our fight as we work to protect the future of representative democracy in America: [[link removed]]
Here’s a look behind the curtain at our strategic playbook going into 2025 and 2026:
2025:
-In Virginia, we’re laser-focused on keeping control of the state legislature and electing Abigail Spanberger as governor, giving the Commonwealth a fighting chance to strengthen its mapping processes.
-Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania, a pro-democracy majority on the state supreme court is up for grabs — these retention elections are critical for ensuring accountability when the right to vote is attacked.
2026:
-We’re investing in 12 key states — Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin — to elect Democracy Defenders and protect the progress we’ve made and fight for fairness in the run-up to the 2031 redistricting cycle.
-The NDRC will be investing in reforming the redistricting process in key states; protecting independent commissions; eliminating the threat of mid-decade gerrymandering; protecting fair-minded state supreme court majorities; and providing long-term investments in tougher states that will build our power.
As you can imagine, fighting to elect these Democracy Defenders requires enormous resources — which are already being stretched by the constant defense we are playing to defeat gerrymandering efforts cropping up seemingly each week. YOU have the power to beat back these attacks today and help us fight for a secure future for our democracy — make your donation to the NDRC today: [[link removed]]
