On average, 184 public safety officers died by suicide each year between 2016 and 2022, according to a report by First Help.
Despite observing an upward trend in first responders seeking psychological, emotional, physical and financial wellness over the span of nearly 18 years, psychologist Tracie Webb, director of the Michigan State Police (MSP) Office of Behavioral Science, said efforts to eliminate the stigma associated with mental health treatment remain a challenge for police agencies nationwide.
In response, the MSP is bolstering initiatives to prioritize mental health by allocating resources for education and offering services such as counseling and therapy to address issues like depression and anxiety, thereby aiming to reduce instances of substance abuse and suicides among law enforcement personnel.

 September 14-20 is National Forensic Science Week, a time to recognize the contributions that forensic science makes to the criminal justice system. The results of forensic testing may assist in the investigation of a crime, be used in criminal proceedings and eliminate a person from suspicion.
To commemorate the week, the MSP Forensic Science Division is releasing a series of videos showcasing its technical disciplines on our social media channels. The first installment includes a previously released overview of the division, followed by two new videos featuring the Latent Prints Unit and the Crime Scene Response Team.

September is National Emergency Preparedness Month, and the Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) is encouraging Michigan residents to use this time to take steps to prepare for emergencies.
The MSP/EMHSD is uniting with agencies nationwide under the theme “Preparedness Starts at Home” to remind you to take steps now to protect against potential disasters. Getting yourself, your family and your home ready for emergencies like home fires, power outages and floods could be life-saving should disaster strike.
To put preparedness into action and commemorate Preparedness Month, the MSP/EMHSD is collaborating with Muskegon County to host the 2025 Prepare Fair from 4 p.m. -7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30 at Heritage Landing, 1050 7th St. Muskegon, MI 49440. Those who attend this family-friendly event will learn about local agencies that respond to emergencies, how to develop a family emergency plan and how to create an emergency preparedness kit. Attendees will also be able to meet local and state first responders and volunteers. The event is free of charge and open to anyone.

The new school year is upon us, and with that, the MSP encourages everyone to know the school bus rules of the road.
Parents are asked to review these key school bus safety reminders with their children:
- Pick a Safe Spot: Choose a safe waiting area away from traffic and streets.
- Buddy Up: Always walk to the bus stop with a friend.
- Stay Calm: Avoid running or playing while waiting for the bus.
- Stay Visible: Never go behind the bus and stay in the driver's view.
- Wait for the Signal: Don't board until the bus stops and the driver signals.
- Cross Safely: Follow traffic signals and crossing guards.
- Be Cautious: Don't talk to strangers, and let parents know if approached.
- Stay in Sight: Never enter a stranger's vehicle.
It’s not just students who need to stay alert. For drivers, it's crucial to follow the state’s school bus stop laws:
- Yellow Lights: Slow down when the bus's yellow lights flash.
- Red Lights: Stop at least 20 feet away when red lights flash. Wait for the bus to move and the driver's signal. Never pass a stopped school bus.
- Hazard Lights: Be cautious when hazard lights near the bus's headlights flash.
 Earlier this month, the MSP Central Route Team participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run, covering 750 miles from Copper Harbor to Belle Isle and raising more than $15,000 for Special Olympics! This year’s team included Sgt. Blaine Bachman, MC Sgt. Shane Pease, Tpr. Logen Dushane, Tpr. Freddy Bahena, Tpr. Jesse Kidner, DNR COs Nick Thornton and Ed Rice, as well as Dewey the MSP Therapy Dog!
