Help us welcome more free software supporters at our fortieth anniversary celebration.

On the left, text reads 'Celebrate! 40 years of software freedom 4 decades, 4 freedoms, 4 all users' and on the right is a simple GNU head

We are less than one month out from our fortieth anniversary, and we need your help getting invitations to the FSF40 celebration to the free software community and beyond! We want this to be a celebration for everyone who values freedom in computing, from activists that have been involved in the free software movement since the 1980s, to people who only know the very basics of using a computer. Not only will FSF40 be a commemoration worthy of celebrating forty years of free software advocacy and development, it will also be an occasion for the free software community to discuss how we can better spread software freedom and make the world more free.

We are expecting all kinds of people, including activists, hackers, legal professionals, artists, educators, students, developers, policymakers, and hobby tinkerers to participate in FSF40. The greater the variety of experiences we have, the greater the ability we have to take on proprietary software and the challenges to software freedom to come. Everyone has something valuable to contribute to the free software movement, and the same can be said for our fortieth celebration.

If you're inviting someone who's never been to an Free Software Foundation event (or it's been quite a while), here are some talking points for encouraging someone to attend FSF40, either in Boston or online:

  • Learn about the early days of the free software movement and how it has evolved;
  • Acquire new skills and knowledge;
  • Show your support for free software;
  • Network with people from multiple different fields;
  • Hear from leaders in the free software and digital rights movements;
  • Play trivia with other attendees;
  • Discover some of the many ways that free software makes our world freer;
  • Get inspired about next steps for furthering free software;
  • Receive a sneak peak into the FSF's plans for 2026 and beyond;
  • Be the first to hear about an exciting new free software project;
  • Participate in the associate member meeting (if you're not an associate member yet, you can become one for as little as $12 a month or $6 for students);
  • And shop for free software merch that helps fund the FSF's work.

Please register yourself and anyone you bring with you in advance -- it helps us ensure we will have enough space and refreshments for everyone.

There are a lot of ways you can share the word about FSF40 with people in your community. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Post about FSF40 on your social media accounts;
  • Add a line to your email signature, for example: "Join me in celebrating forty years of software freedom at FSF40";
  • Distribute the flyer at your workplace, with friends, and in your social groups;
  • Personally invite people you think might be interested in free software;
  • Share our sponsorship prospectus with your favorite businesses;
  • Or share our press kit with blogs and news sites that you read.

Even if you can't join us for FSF40 live in Boston or online (we really hope you can!), you can help us reach more free software supporters who can. By sharing the word about FSF40, you'll help us honor four decades of progress in software freedom.

We are so excited to celebrate forty years of the FSF and software freedom advocacy with everyone, in person and online. Any outreach you can do in your community is immensely appreciated. The more we all talk about free software, for FSF40 and beyond, the more we cement it as an important and powerful part of our lives. Thank you in advance for telling others about our fortieth birthday and how they can join us in deciding the free software movement's next steps.

Let's build a freer future together!
