It is a scary time for our country. Just like you, the MoveOn staff are horrified by the recent acts of political violence that have claimed the lives of Democratic lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, conservative activist Charlie Kirk, and others from across the political spectrum.
History shows us that political violence only leads to more political violence. And at MoveOn, we have believed—and always will believe—that we must settle political disputes through debate and at the ballot box, never through violence.
Right now, our country desperately needs elected leaders who will bring all of us together for the sake of our democracy.
Instead, Donald Trump is throwing gasoline on the fire to scare and silence us. But we cannot let him, and we can choose to be courageous together.
In a very dark turn for America, the Trump administration is exploiting Kirk's horrific murder to launch a sweeping crackdown on the free speech of its political opposition.1 MoveOn must be ready, but we will not be intimidated.
On Monday, JD Vance and Stephen Miller vowed to unleash the full power of the federal government against “leftist nongovernmental organizations."2
As the largest grassroots progressive organization in the country, MoveOn must take these threats of an aggressive crackdown on the left with grave seriousness.
In this moment, we must bolster our power to fight back, be prepared to support others who have our backs, and make our voices even louder through peaceful protests, including the upcoming No Kings events on October 18. As a grassroots organization, we need your help to do it in this most critical moment for our country.

After Kirk’s death, Trump’s Department of Justice quietly removed from its website a study showing white supremacist and far-right violence “continues to outpace all other types of terrorism and domestic violent extremism” in the United States.3
We don’t know what’s next. According to media reports, the Trump administration is considering using RICO, the law often used to prosecute organized crime, against progressive groups, designating groups as domestic terrorist organizations, and/or revoking their nonprofit status.4 Each of these approaches, regardless of how frivolous the cases are, could tie organizations in legal and financial knots for years.
MoveOn will not be intimidated into silence and compliance. Far from it.
As MoveOn's executive director told our staff yesterday, "We're moving forward with strength and bravery in this moment."
