John, what happened to Charlie Kirk last week was horrific, and my heart goes out to his wife and children. Political violence like this has no place in America.

But that's not why Jimmy Kimmel was taken off the air this week.

Trump's own FCC chair practically admitted it: This was about silencing a critic of the president.

That's why he pushed to defund NPR and cancel Stephen Colbert's show, brought lawsuits against the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and 60 Minutes, and blocked the Associated Press' access to the White House.

Trump is working to silence his dissenters.

Whatever you think of what Jimmy said, any president having the power to decide which voices get heard – and which get silenced – is wrong and undemocratic.

I went to Congress as a civil rights lawyer. I know what it looks like when people's rights are on the line. Right now, we need to protect our freedom of speech. But I can’t do it alone – I need to know if you're standing with me to safeguard our most fundamental First Amendment rights:

Do you believe we need to protect our First Amendment rights?

Thank you for standing with me in defending our freedoms.

– Colin
