Dear Friend,

A month ago, Demand Progress members rallied to stop Congress from handing
Trump the authority to look at American citizens' internet browsing
histories without a search warrant.

Now Mitch McConnell is trying to use an obscure Senate rule to pass the
bill anyway.^1 He thinks that with the media focused on the pandemic and
police brutality, he can sneak authorization through for Trump's internet
spying.

No such luck, Mitch. We’re not going to let the Trump administration
invade Americans’ privacy without a fight.

Trump has activated the DEA and FBI against activists. He has asked to use
“overwhelming military force” to take them down.

And he's using the vast surveillance network at his fingertips to target
and harass protestors by collecting information about them to use against
them later.

If the Senate sneaks through its Patriot Act renewal, the Trump
administration will be able to see our most private internet history with
no one holding it accountable.

This isn’t the first time Trump has tried to use surveillance power
against protesters. The DOJ has already tried to collect IP addresses of
people who visited websites that were planning protests at the
inauguration.^2

We already won a major battle against the Patriot Act when we insisted on
language banning these warrantless searches—language that caused the House
to shelve the bill altogether back in March. The more people hear about
the outrageous surveillance powers in the reauthorization, the more
unpopular it becomes.

We need to publicize the Senate’s attempt to reauthorize the Trump
administration's warrantless web searches. Will you donate to help protect
our internet privacy?

[ [link removed] ]Yes, I'll donate to help stop warrantless spying on our internet
history without a warrant.

For our democracy,

Robert Cruickshank,
Demand Progress
