Welcome to the Mapping the Future newsletter, where we feature reporting by City Limits and other outlets—as well as resources for readers—on the politics and policy of land-use and housing in New York City.
Here are this week's top stories:
Council Softens but Doesn’t Stop Hit to Housing Budget
Despite some last minute restorations and additions, the city’s affordable housing program took a major hit in the city’s $88.19 billion budget which was overwhelmingly approved by the City Council in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. A few victories were won this week: funding was secured for the Foreclosure Prevention Programs, Community Housing Preservation Strategies, and Community Land Trust Initiative.
Advocates: NYC Needs More Money, New Model to Meet Housing Crisis
Advocates say there are dual housing crises emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic: an unstable housing market vulnerable to exploitation and the onslaught of expected evictions. A recent report from United Hospital Fund found 45 percent of New York tenants pay more than 30 percent of their income toward rent, making them “rent burdened,” and nearly 30 percent are severely rent burdened meaning they pay more than 50% of their income toward rent.
