SIGN NOW: Turn Off Disney and ABC until they STOP caving to Trump >>
John, when a democracy turns into a dictatorship, it isn’t just because one man wants power.
It’s because everyone else lets him take it. When an aspiring authoritarian is trying to seize control, everyone else – companies, universities, and the rest of the government – has to decide whether they’ll go along to preserve their short-term interests, or resist.
And John, we’re in one of those make-or-break moments right now.
Ever since ABC and its parent company Disney cancelled Jimmy Kimmel’s show [1] following threats from Trump’s FCC chair [2] – I’ve heard from thousands of Common Cause members asking: what can I do to stop this?
And in just the past 24 hours, nearly 90,000 of you have signed our petition telling media companies to stop caving to Trump – but now it’s time to turn up the heat.
So today, Common Cause is announcing our Turn Off Disney campaign – demanding they reinstate Kimmel's show and reaffirm their commitment to the First Amendment. You can join by doing any of the following:
- Stop watching ABC, including your local network.
- Stop watching their cable channels like ESPN, FX, Freeform, and Disney Channel.
- Cancel Disney streaming services like Hulu, Disney+, & ESPN+, and tell them why.
- Don’t plan trips to Disneyland, Disney World, or any other Disney parks.
- Use social media to tell Disney to stop doing Trump’s bidding.
This is one thing you can do – right here and right now – to resist Trump’s dreams of dictatorship. If you’re in, can you let us know by signing your name onto our Turn Off Disney campaign today?
Jimmy Kimmel is just the latest media figure silenced: Stephen Colbert [3], Karen Attiah [4], and Joy Reid [5] – all crossed Trump, then lost their jobs.
Add that to the Washington Post rejecting Common Cause’s anti-Elon Musk ad earlier this year [6] – and you start to worry about the direction this country is heading.
I don’t want to live in a country where you can’t criticize the Dear Leader – and I know you don’t either. We should be free to disagree – our First Amendment is the first one for a reason, because you simply can’t have a democracy without that right.
Trump clearly doesn’t agree – but he can only get his way if these corporate media outlets comply in advance. And that’s exactly what they’re doing, for one big reason: their bottom line.
They’re worried – not without cause – that if they don’t obey Trump’s every command, he’ll call them names, sue, or use the power of the federal government to punish them.
John, I can’t finance million-dollar lawsuits or revoke broadcast licenses – and I bet you can’t either – but together, we can do something powerful. We don’t have to give our hard-earned dollars to companies that help Trump undermine our democracy.
And by voting with our pocketbooks and remote controls, we can tell Disney and ABC that the customers they rely on are demanding they defend our First Amendment – not help Trump chip away at it.
This is bigger than one T.V. show or one company. Let’s all do our part – and Turn Off Disney until they stop helping Trump turn America into a dictatorship >>
Here’s your chance to draw a firm line in the sand against Trump’s attacks on our free press and our free speech.
Thanks for all you do,
The team at Common Cause
