WASHINGTON, D.C. – America First Legal (AFL), with co-counsel Trent McCotter with Boyden Gray PLLC, has filed an amicus brief in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, urging the court to reject D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb’s reckless attempt to stop the federal government from assisting with the restoration of public safety in our nation’s capital.
AFL’s brief highlights how the Trump Administration’s decisive actions to protect Americans in our nation’s capital, which include deploying National Guard personnel and supporting local law enforcement, have significantly improved public safety in Washington, D.C. The positive impact is undeniable:
Violent crime in D.C. is down nearly 50 percent compared to the same nineteen-day period in 2024, according to CBS News. The same data also shows that violent crime is down compared to the same period in each of the last five years.
Carjackings, “a particularly brutal crime,” are down to the lowest rate in ten years, according to NBC News. In August 2024, D.C. saw thirty-nine carjackings, compared to just ten in August 2025. Of those ten, six occurred before federal control.
Burglaries are down 48 percent, and car thefts are down 36 percent.
Yet instead of recognizing and celebrating these historic improvements in public safety and trust in law enforcement, the D.C. Attorney General is pushing false narratives to advance an ideological agenda, victimizing the very people he was elected to serve and protect.
AFL urges the court to reject the D.C. Attorney General’s dangerous lawsuit and reaffirm its duty to protect law-abiding Americans.
“The Trump Administration took bold, decisive, and unquestionably lawful action to protect innocent Americans in Washington, D.C. from violent crime and protect the interests of the federal government. Brian Schwalb’s misguided lawsuit prioritizes criminals over citizens, anarchy over order, and political ideology over human life. We are proud to support the Administration’s efforts to keep the American people safe,” said Gene Hamilton, President of America First Legal.
