Dear John,
Thank you to everyone who joined our Deportation Defense Training last night. For those who could not attend, we wanted to ensure that the crucial information and resources shared during the training were shared widely to our membership.
Over 150 people attended from around the country to expand Iranian-American community power and knowledge about unjust ICE detentions. We know these issues are urgent for our community, and we’re grateful to be building knowledge and preparedness together. We sincerely thank our guest experts from New York Civil Liberties Union and Asian Law Caucus for sharing critical knowledge with us.
We especially want to thank and honor Reza Zavvar and his sister Maryam for being willing to join us and share their story. We celebrate Reza’s release after experiencing such unjust detention and harrowing conditions, and take it as a reminder to recommit ourselves to this work for all impacted families.
For those who could not join – or if you would like to review – here are the key materials:
* Training Recording: Watch here [[link removed]]
* Training Slides: View here [[link removed]]
* Make the Road NY Materials: Emergency Planning Resource [[link removed]] & Deportation Defense Manual; Pages 28 - 44 [[link removed]]
* Asian Law Caucus Records Request Training on Friday 10/3 [[link removed]] : Learn how to prepare with impacted communities and loved ones against the threat of removal, hear from seasoned legal and organizing advocates on best practices and strategies to get the right records as quickly as possible, and get some hands-on practice with our training team to successfully execute a records request.
We also want to highlight resources from NIAC which address many of the questions raised on the call about de-naturalization, ICE detentions, and more during the training:
* NIAC FAQ on Travel Ban, Birthright Citizenship & Denaturalization [[link removed]]
* NIAC’s ICE Tracker of Detained Iranians [[link removed]]
* Know Your Rights at U.S. Ports of Entry (IABA) [[link removed]] | Persian Version Here [[link removed]]
* General Legal Resources & Travel Information [[link removed]]
Lastly, we know war abroad leads to a rise in repression at home. The risk of war breaking out again is dire, and Trump’s deportation machine continues to target our community at heightened levels in addition to the threat of war. To help us build up our community preparedness, we strongly encourage you to share and forward these resources to your networks, as community knowledge and defense are critical right now for Iranian Americans.
We will continue standing with our community against these renewed attacks, and for our civil rights.
In solidarity,
Team NIAC
