Confronting suicide in the construction community is one of AFSP’s strategic priorities because of its high rates of suicide relative to other industries. We are proud to announce that through Hard Hat Courage –– an unprecedented collective commitment on the part of the construction industry to make it safe to talk about mental health every day, on every jobsite, launched by AFSP and Bechtel –– we have reached more than 188,000 craft and construction industry professionals since May 2025, including over 165,000 who participated in awareness initiatives during Construction Suicide Prevention Week (September 8-12, 2025).
To expand access to AFSP’s resources and programs, we have established new or expanded partnerships with construction industry organizations, including:
- The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), the leading provider of construction education for industry and career and technical education programs
- Construction Suicide Prevention Week, a Kansas City-based nonprofit founded to raise awareness about mental health issues and suicide prevention and to provide support within the construction industry
- and APM, a building construction and maintenance solutions provider delivering world-class craft professionals to jobsites.
Since the Hard Hat Courage resource hub August 19 launch, there have been over 360 downloads of 15 newly created, construction-specific suicide prevention resources.
Learn more about how we are reaching construction industry professionals, and giving them the tools, guidance, and encouragement to look out for themselves, and each other.
