Meet the 2025-26 Sadler Scholars and CERA Fellows
Professional development for doctoral students and early-career bioethicists


We welcome the 2025-26 Sadler Scholars, advanced doctoral students and early-career bioethics researchers selected through a competitive application process. Two of the new Sadler Scholars are also CERA Fellows—thanks to our collaboration with the Center for ELSI Research and Analysis (CERA), which will offer them professional opportunities relevant to their research on the ethical, legal, and social implications of human genomics. Can AI hear cancer in your voice? Earlier this month, Dr. Sanjay Gupta explored the possibility that, with the help of AI, doctors might be able to diagnose cancer and other illnesses from the sound of your voice. His podcast featured Yaël Bensoussan, an otolaryngologist at the University of South Florida who discussed a project on voice as a biomarker of health that she is leading with Hastings Center President Vardit Ravitsky. Euthanasia as Medical Therapy in Canada
Bioethicist raises concerns


Less than a decade after Canada legalized euthanasia and medical assistance in dying, recent reports show how Canada has normalized ending life as a form of therapy, often for only indirectly health-related suffering, writes Trudo Lemmens in the Hastings Center Report. Lemmens, a Hastings Center Fellow and a member of the committee that issued the reports, cites a young woman who received medical aid in dying for lacking affordable housing that met her accessibility needs.
