Soon, government funding will run out, which means that if there is no agreement between Democrats and Republicans on a spending bill, the government will shut down.
Now, maybe that's what the Republicans want. Maybe they want to shut it all down. After all, they've been shutting down the government every day. Already, the GOP is impounding funds that we have approved on a bipartisan basis. They're withholding these funds in violation of the law.
John, let me tell you a little bit about what is at stake. When the negotiations take place — if they happen at all — they're taking place at a time when millions of Americans are poised to lose access to health care.
This is due to a number of causes. We're gonna lose health care because of massive cuts Republicans are making to the VA and its staff, cuts they're making at the National Institute of Health, and the removal of expert scientists and researchers at the CDC.
But most significantly, in the GOP’s Big, Ugly Bill, they made a trillion dollars of cuts to Medicaid and the ACA. As a result, millions of people are gonna lose access to health care completely, and millions more are going to pay premium increases of up to 75 percent.
John, I will not agree to a budget that continues these types of cuts and premium increases to health care.
Republicans have already said they won’t honor any budget we would agree to, and they plan to renege on it. That cannot happen. There must be a mechanism to protect against the continuing illegal use or non-use of government funding.
And if they want my vote for a funding bill, they’re going to have to agree to restore health care for people who are going to be losing it by the millions. They’re going to have to agree to reduce the cost of healthcare insurance.
Instead of having 75% healthcare costs imposed on the American people, they're going to have to agree to end the use of federal government money for lawless, corrupt purposes. Taxpayer dollars shouldn’t be paying for Trump-branded propaganda.
