** Concerned About Public Transit in Mecklenburg Co.? Apply for the Metropolitan Public Transit Authority.
------------------------------------------------------------
The new Metropolitan Public Transit Authority applications are now being accepted through October 13, 2025. You can apply via this link ([link removed]) . This Authority shall only occur if the voters approve the advisory referendum (as described in Session Law 2025-39) in the 2025 general election coming up.
NC Governor Josh Stein signed the Projects for Advancing Vehicle-Infrastructure Enhancements (PAVE) Act into law on July 1, 2025. The legislation, also known as House Bill 948, pertains specifically to Mecklenburg County. The PAVE Act authorizes the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners to place a one-cent sales tax referendum on the November 2025 ballot for voters to decide. Early voting starts October 16 and Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 4.
The PAVE Act also provides enacting legislation for the formation of a Metropolitan Public Transit Authority. The purpose of the Authority shall be to finance, provide, operate, and maintain for a safe, clean, reliable, adequate, convenient, energy efficient, economically, and environmentally sound public transportation system for the service area of the authority through the granting of franchises, ownership, and leasing of terminals, buses, and other transportation facilities and equipment, and otherwise through the exercise of the powers and duties conferred upon it, in order to enhance mobility in the region and encourage sound growth patterns.
