Yesterday, Donald Trump successfully pressured ABC into suspending Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show.

Benjamin Franklin once warned, “Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech.”

Trump is proving that warning right. He’s attacking independent media, punishing dissent, and intimidating anyone who dares to speak out. He is trying to silence us.

Make no mistake: This is about more than one TV show. This is about freedom of speech, the independence of our press, and the foundation of our democracy itself. Trump wants to tear it down — and he’s starting with silencing voices he doesn’t like, voices that hold him publicly accountable.

I’m sounding the alarm. Our democracy has never been more blatantly at risk. This is another step toward a fully authoritarian government.

We cannot let him win. We need bold, fearless leaders in Washington who will stand up to Trump, fight back against authoritarianism, and protect the rights of everyday Americans. I will be that leader. I’ve stood up before — and I will stand up again.
