Dear Friend,

On Wednesday morning, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May stood side by side with Senator Marilou McPhedran to call for a simple but powerful change: lowering Canada’s voting age to 16.

At the heart of their collaboration is Bill S-222, Senator McPhedran’s legislation to extend the right to vote to 16- and 17-year-olds, and allow 14- and 15-year-olds to pre-register with Elections Canada. Elizabeth has committed to carrying this bill forward when it reaches the House of Commons.

Why does it matter? Because research shows that if you don’t vote the first time you’re eligible, you’re less likely to become a lifelong voter. Voting at 16 means young people can cast that first ballot while still rooted in their home communities — not juggling a move, a new job, or the start of university.

And at 16, Canadians already shoulder major responsibilities: they can drive, work, and pay taxes. Surely, they deserve a say in the decisions that shape their future.

Young Canadians themselves have been clear. In a national consultation, 71% of youth said they are comfortable lowering the voting age. They spoke passionately about climate change, mental health, equality, education, and Indigenous rights — issues too often sidelined in politics, but central to their lives.

This is what democracy should look like: politicians working together, amplifying young voices, and refusing to squander the future.

But passing Bill S-222 won’t be easy. What makes this moment different is the partnership between Elizabeth May in the House of Commons and Senator Marilou McPhedran in the Senate.

This is how Greens work: collaboratively and with integrity, for the good of our democracy. Elizabeth’s partnership with Senator McPhedran is proof of what’s possible when shared values come first.

Your donation today strengthens that kind of politics. It ensures Elizabeth has the resources to keep building these alliances, amplifying young voices, and pushing for a democracy that truly includes the next generation.
