Dear John,

They're at it again.

In his first week back in the Scottish Parliament after Holyrood's summer break, the SNP leader John Swinney should have been focused on the big challenges facing the Borders and Scotland.

He could have focused on bringing bills down. Or improving local schools. Or reducing NHS waiting lists.

He could have announced an investigation into the Berwickshire water crisis, committed to keeping Hawick Fire Station open 24/7 or provided more funding to fix roads like the A7 and A68.

Instead, he chose to spend his time publishing yet another taxpayer-funded paper on independence and announcing his latest plan to try and separate Scotland from the rest of the United Kingdom.
I was pleased to see Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay call this out at First Minister's Questions, telling John Swinney that he needs to "get back to the day job" and "move on".

I couldn't agree more.

It is now 11 years to the day that Scotland held an independence referendum.

We said no. We meant it then and we mean it now.

It is time the SNP gave this a rest and focused all their attention on governing in the interest of the majority, not the minority.
Kind regards,

John Lamont MP
