*Governor Gordon to Highlight Locally Driven Education Innovation for National Education Leaders *

"As Chair of Education Commission of the States, Governor will build on success of Wyoming’s collaborative approach to education under RIDE Initiative"

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Governor Mark Gordon will host education leaders from around the country in Wyoming next week in his role as chairman of the Education Commission of the States (ECS), kicking off the Governor’s CHANGE (Community Hubs for Addressing Needs for a Greater Education) Initiative [ [link removed] ]. The CHANGE initiative reflects the Governor’s longstanding belief that empowering communities is critical for creating sustainable, student-centered education systems.

Participants from 20 states and Washington D.C. will engage in conversations to better understand how to strengthen partnerships with communities to develop locally driven, results-focused education strategies. As part of the event, Governor Gordon's Reimaging and Innovating the Delivery of Education (RIDE) Initiative [ [link removed] ] will be highlighted as a model for other states to learn from. Education leaders will visit Teton County School District No.1 (TCSD #1) to see the RIDE initiative in action and hear directly from teachers and students on how their community vision is being realized at the school-level and how they are benefiting.

“I’m looking forward to not only talking about the great things happening in Wyoming classrooms, but showing how with exceptional teachers and administrators, we’re getting students more involved and engaged in their education,” Governor Gordon said. “Through involvement of parents and communities, we can explore new approaches that make sense for each student, based on their unique interests and needs.”

Launched in 2021, the RIDE Initiative is currently being implemented in 20 Wyoming school districts, emphasizing collaboration with students, parents, and community members to meet each learner’s unique needs.  The Governor has visited districts across the state to see firsthand how this approach fosters personalized learning, greater community engagement, and smarter long-term investments.

“What’s happening in Wyoming proves that when schools, families, and communities come together, they can create meaningful change for students,” said ECS President José Muñoz. “Governor Gordon’s leadership is giving state and national leaders a front-row seat to see what locally driven innovation looks like in action—and how it can inspire smarter policies in states across the country.”

“As we all know, student learning does not only start and stop within the walls of schools,” said Dr. Scott Crisp, Interim Superintendent for TCSD #1. “By connecting students with learning opportunities that exist in the community, students will continue to develop skills such as communication, problem solving, and adaptability which directly apply to success in life.”

Education Commission of the States (ECS) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that advocates for attaining education excellence for all by helping state leaders identify, develop and implement public education policy that addresses the current and future needs of a learning society. The Governor was named ECS chair in December and will serve until 2027.
