I was sworn into Congress on January 4, 2019 — in the midst of a Trump temper tantrum that turned into the longest government shutdown in modern history. The 35-day shutdown cost the U.S. economy $11 billion.

It felt like walking into a buzzsaw right as I stepped into office, and it pissed me off on behalf of my constituents whom I was just elected to serve.

Now it looks like Trump and the Republicans are getting ready to pick our collective pockets again. As we all know, the GOP holds the Senate and the House, so it’s very much their job to lead the way and make sure a budget is negotiated in time to keep the government funded. So, what happens if the Republicans can’t pass a spending bill before September 30th? * Federal workers will be sent home without pay — not knowing when they’ll get their next check.
* Air-traffic controllers and TSA agents would be asked to work without pay — sounds dangerous, right?
* Folks on food stamps may have their benefits delayed — that means no groceries for vulnerable families.
* National parks may be closed — hurting businesses and locking out visitors across the country.
* Local services in DC may stop — leaving our capital city littered with trash.

There are so many more things I could list here; the above is just the tip of a very ugly iceberg.

So why are we talking about this right now? Because Republicans are once again playing chicken with the U.S. economy and the lives of our citizens, and I sure as hell am not going to help them do it.
