News from Representative Bera

Dear John,

This has been a busy September in Washington, and I wanted to take a moment to update you on my recent work in Congress — from fighting to protect affordable, high-quality health care to demanding transparency and accountability from this Administration.

But first, I want to address the tragic and deeply disturbing events of the past week.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk was a horrific act of political violence, and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms.

Political violence is a cancer on our nation. We don’t have to agree with one another’s beliefs — in fact, some views may be deeply offensive or wrong — but we must reject violence as a means of resolving disputes.

We’ve got to find a way to live together as Americans. We’ve got to reject the dangerous rhetoric, be civil, and be kind to one another.

That’s what I’m committed to doing — and I hope you’ll join me.

Please keep reading to learn more about what I’ve been working on in D.C. If you haven’t already, follow me on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, YouTube, and Twitter/X to get the latest updates from my office.

Be well,

Demanding RFK Jr.'s Resignation as Secretary of Health and Human Services

Image

Following the firing of CDC Director Susan Monarez and the resignation of several top public health officials, I joined my colleagues in the Democratic Doctors Caucus to demand the resignation of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

As a doctor, I am deeply alarmed by actions taken by Secretary Kennedy that are undermining science, public health, and trust in vaccines.

Allowing him to continue at HHS undermines the core mission of the Department: to protect and promote the health of the American people. I will continue to demand his resignation and call on President Trump to fire him to safeguard the health and safety of our communities.

Demanding Action on Mail Theft in Sacramento County

Image

Mail theft and vandalism remain a serious and ongoing problem across the Sacramento region.

That’s why I sent a letter to Attorney General Bondi and Chief Postal Inspector Barksdale urging the creation of a dedicated task force that brings together the Department of Justice, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and local law enforcement.

This task force should be fully empowered to investigate and prosecute the ongoing theft of mail and postal keys, and to combat the widespread vandalism of Cluster Box Units (CBUs) that is disrupting daily life for residents across our region.

I joined CBS 13 to discuss this effort. You can watch the news clip here and read more about what I'm doing here

Standing with Planned Parenthood

Image

Planned Parenthood does so much more than reproductive health care.

In communities across the country, they’re often the only provider of primary care for both women and men.

But Medicaid cuts enacted by President Trump and Congressional Republicans threaten to shutter 200 Planned Parenthood health centers nationwide.

I was proud to join Planned Parenthood President and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson and my Democratic Doctors Caucus colleagues at a press conference last week to speak out and fight back against these harmful cuts.

Protecting the Affordable Care Act

You’re probably hearing a lot about a possible government shutdown. Here’s my bottom line: I won’t support any deal that takes away health care from working families. The Affordable Care Act subsidies help millions of Americans afford coverage — and I’m committed to protecting them.

As a doctor, I saw what happens when people can’t afford the care they need. Patients skip checkups and go without medications. Chronic conditions worsen, small problems turn into major health crises, and preventable illnesses become emergencies.

In Congress, I will continue fighting to make health care affordable and accessible for everyone — not just the wealthy.

10th Annual Brain Health Forum

Image

Alzheimer's remains one of the leading causes of death in the United States. As a doctor and former Chief Medical Officer of Sacramento County, I'm concerned about how this disease is impacting our parents and grandparents.

That's why on Wednesday, October 1st at 9:30am, my office is hosting our 10th annual Brain Health Forum in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association. This event will provide local residents with information on the latest in Alzheimer's research and what community resources are available to assist caregivers and persons living with Alzheimer's or other dementias.

Representatives from other community groups will also be available for a community resource fair where they will answer individual questions and provide resources.
The event will begin with a resource fair at 9:30am followed by the main program at 10am.
