UK-based oil trader BB Energy is suing one of the poorest countries in the world, South Sudan, through the High Court in London.

It’s jaw-dropping that a country so devastated by years of conflict and at the sharp end of the climate crisis could be targeted in this way by lenders. [1]

Momentum is building in parliament for the government to act on the global debt crisis. This week, MPs have been discussing how to push for urgent action on private lenders - and the chair of an influential parliamentary committee has just written publicly to the government to demand a debt justice law. [2]

It’s possible that a bill to stop private lenders like BB Energy from suing countries in debt crisis will again return to parliament before the end of the parliamentary year. If so, it will provide another opportunity to push MPs to support action on the crisis.

Thousands of campaigners like you have signed petitions, written to and even met with your MPs to demand a new debt justice law. Now will you take two minutes to email oil trader BB Energy and call on them to drop the court case against South Sudan?

Our broken global system is allowing private lenders to sue countries in turmoil – and UK law is the tool they’re using to do it. Ultimately, it’s the people of countries like South Sudan who will pay the price.

This is a prime example of why we need the government to act. We need to make sure lenders like BB Energy know we won’t let them get away with it.
