Friend,
I’m writing to you from Washington, D.C., where the National Immigration Law Center is attending a Congressional shadow hearing to expose the lawlessness and harm of Trump’s mass deportation campaign.
Our elected officials must hear from the people most impacted. That’s why NILC, in partnership with the Tennessee Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition, is supporting two brave witnesses – Chelsea White and Mimi Lettunich – in advocating for their loved ones in D.C. They will share their firsthand experiences with the harm of Trump’s mass deportation regime.
Chelsea White:
On May 9, Chelsea White and her husband of 12 years, Hilario, pulled up to a roadblock that would change their lives. After looking at Hilario, the Tennessee Highway Patrol directed them into a nearby parking lot, where they were immediately surrounded by agents in unmarked clothing.
ICE arrested Hilario on the spot and told Chelsea to leave. She had no answers to bring home to their three children, all of whom are U.S. citizens. One month later, Hilario was deported to Mexico.
Chelsea will testify about how Hilario’s deportation forced her to choose between family separation and leaving their entire lives behind. Her children – two of whom have learning disabilities – are now struggling to adapt to life in a country they’ve never known.
Mimi Lettunich:
For the past two months, Mimi Lettunich has stepped into a new role: caregiver to her friend’s nine-year-old triplets and seven-year-old son.
In June, immigration agents detained Jackie Merlos, her four U.S. citizen children, and their grandmother. As a dear friend, Mimi has had a front-seat view into the extreme and cruel lengths that CBP and ICE have gone to target a family.
Mimi will testify about how CBP agents arrested Jackie and her 9 and 7-year-olds under false allegations, denied Jackie access to her lawyer and phone calls, and interrogated her young children.
What happened to Hilario and the Merlos family is part of an alarming pattern. Every day, the Trump administration is violently disappearing our immigrant neighbors, leaving children, families, and communities to grapple with their absence. The harm is enormous. We must tell their stories and demand accountability.
To hear Mimi and Chelsea’s powerful stories firsthand, tune in to the livestream of today’s hearing at 8:30 am ET via this link. ([link removed])

Heidi Altman
