🚨 Jimmy Kimmel Suspended – Why That Should Concern All of Us

Jimmy Kimmel has been suspended. And the reason should concern anyone who
values free expression.

On Monday night, Kimmel used his late-night monologue to criticize how
some in the MAGA movement responded to the death of Charlie Kirk. He
called out what he saw as an attempt to deflect blame and politicize the
violence.

Today, FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr publicly suggested in an interview
with a right-wing podcaster that ABC should somehow punish Kimmel. He also
hinted that ABC’s affiliates could face “news distortion” investigations
if they did not.

“You could certainly see a path forward for suspension over this,” Carr
said.^[1]

Just hours after that statement, ABC pulled Kimmel off the air.

This series of events is deeply alarming. And it isn’t the first time a
major news outlet has given in to authoritarian demands from the Trump
regime.

The FCC does have a role in overseeing broadcast standards — but that role
is not meant to include targeting specific individuals for political
commentary. When a federal official publicly suggests that a host be
suspended, and that suggestion is followed by swift action from the
broadcaster, it creates the appearance of government interference in
editorial decisions. That should concern every viewer, regardless of
politics.

FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez, the panel’s lone Democrat, issued a clear
statement:

“This Administration is increasingly using the weight of government
power to suppress lawful expression… not because speech glorifies
violence or breaks the law, but because it challenges those in
power.”^[2]

Whether or not you agree with what Kimmel said, this moment goes far
beyond any one segment.

Broadcasters should not feel pressure to remove voices in response to
public pressure from federal regulators.
