SIGN NOW: Tell corporate media to stop bowing to Trump >>
John, ABC just took late night host Jimmy Kimmel off the air “indefinitely.” [1]
This news comes just hours after Trump’s handpicked FCC chair threatened to take away the network’s broadcast license over comments Kimmel made on air he didn’t agree with – telling ABC: “we can do this the easy way or the hard way.” [2]
That’s a red alert for media company profit margins – Nextar, the largest owner of ABC stations in the country, has millions on the line right now as they await Trump’s approval for a merger deal to grow even bigger. [3]
Time and time again, when Trump or his cronies say jump, corporate media giants ask how high. And when our government – which is supposed to follow the First Amendment – threatens to retaliate against its critics, these profit-driven companies are all too willing to comply in advance.
If you agree that our media should hold the powerful accountable – NOT bow to them – sign the petition to demand ABC and other media companies stop caving to Trump >>
First, Stephen Colbert was cancelled, now Jimmy Kimmel – don’t be surprised if Jimmy Fallon comes onstage tonight wearing a MAGA hat to keep his job.
But jokes aside, this is bigger than one T.V. show.
Trump is, bit by bit, demolishing our free press and our free speech: threatening to jail peaceful protesters [4] tearing down public media like PBS and NPR [5], suing independent outlets into silence [6], and trying to coerce corporate media giants into submission.
These attacks are straight out of the authoritarian playbook. [7] A free, independent media is a First Amendment guarantee that’s essential to democracy – helping expose corruption, hold leaders accountable, and inform the public.
But instead, companies like ABC and CBS are sending everyone who works for them – journalists, researchers, even late night comedians – a clear message: speak out against Trump or the company bosses, and you’re out.
Add your name to push back: Tell ABC and the rest of the corporate media to stop surrendering to Trump and start defending democracy and free speech >>
Thanks for all you do,
The team at Common Cause
