When children are forced to flee their homes, go days without food or endure looming bomb threats, we all have a responsibility to show up. Today, we’re sharing reports from three communities facing dire situations and updates on how we’re responding with your generous support.

📍Islam Qala, Afganistan  

Since the start of the year, more than 800,000 children have crossed back into Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan. Many were either born in a neighboring country or spent years as refugees. Families are returning to a country where nearly 23 million people already need humanitarian assistance — with shortages of food, safe shelter, and health care. Last month’s earthquake in Kunar and Nangarhar has only deepened the crisis, killing more than 2,200 people and leaving thousands injured, with children once again bearing the brunt.

Our teams are providing child-friendly spaces to keep children learning and playing as they return to Afghanistan, supporting more than 150,000 children since March. Save the Children is also continuing to provide emergency health care, safe water, hygiene support and child protection services.

📍Cabo Delgado, Mozambique 

For eight years, conflict has been taking a devastating toll on children in Mozambique. Recent heavy fighting has displaced thousands of children, putting their safety at risk. Since July, nearly 60,000 people — many of them children — have been forced to flee their homes. 

Save the Children is helping families reunite and providing them with food, water, medical care and a safe space for children to learn and play.

📍Sumy, Ukraine 

For over three years, full-scale war in Ukraine has upended the lives of children and families — stripping them of nutrition, safety and education. 

But amid the endless air raid sirens, constant threats and looming uncertainty, Lesia* refuses to give up. As an aid worker with a Save the Children partner organization, she works tirelessly to ensure children living under siege can experience a fleeting sense of normalcy and a semblance of a happy childhood.
