I hope you’re sitting down. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis went on Sean Hannity’s show recently and blamed Democrats for Republicans’ latest attempts to steal power through gerrymandering in states like Texas, Missouri, Indiana, and beyond. This is some of the strangest gaslighting I’ve seen in a long time. He called out President Obama and A.G. Holder directly, alleging that they “gerrymandered brutally across the country in this decade’s census.” What an insane lie! What actually happened is the exact opposite, of course: President Obama and A.G. Holder started the NDRC to fight tirelessly to make elections fairer, driving out extreme partisan gerrymandering that had systematically taken power away from the voters. And that work paid off — helping deliver what the New York Times called the “fairest House map of the last 40 years.” Ron DeSantis is upset because he doesn’t like a level playing field. He knows what we know — when maps are fair, Democrats win. DeSantis is lying about us as part of his attempt to plant seeds for Florida to follow in Texas’s footsteps and complete its own mid-decade redraw. We cannot let that happen. Will you rush a donation to fight back against anti-democracy extremists like DeSantis, who want to unfairly lock in power for themselves at the expense of voters?
And get this: Now, DeSantis wants Florida to suddenly be awarded an “extra seat in Congress,” which would allow him to redraw its map once again — to consolidate even more power for himself and his party. He even says they’re “entitled to” it. The stakes here couldn’t be higher. Anti-democracy extremists like DeSantis are trying to silence millions of Americans. The NDRC is committed to doing everything we can to hold the line against this assault on our democracy. Can we count on you to donate today to power this critical work? Thanks so much, Marina Jenkins
