Hi John - the Amazon rainforest is on fire.[1]

If the fires continue to rage, it's not just the rainforest that's at stake - it's our very survival. Because if the Amazon dies, our chances of avoiding total climate breakdown will be seriously under threat. This truly is a climate emergency.

Many of you have been asking what you can do to help. Well, right now the UK is holding trade talks with Brazil.[2] Let's call on the UK government to suspend these talks until the Amazon fires are out. It could be the one thing that pushes Brazilian president Bolsonaro into taking action.

Tell the UK government no trade talks with Brazil until the fires are out and the Amazon and its people are protected. (This is the most effective way we can help here in the UK. So let's make this massive, really fast).

It's hard to convey just how important the Amazon rainforest is, but I'll give it a shot. The Amazon provides 20% of the earth's oxygen, it's home to more species than any other habitat on this planet, and it's absolutely crucial in the fight against climate change because its trees soak up so much of the CO2 we emit.

The fires that are raging there right now are not natural - they're part of Bolsonaro's war on the Amazon. Since coming into office, the Brazilian president has encouraged farmers and illegal loggers to loot the rainforest. His supporters have been starting fires deliberately - to clear land and to show their support for him.

The Brazilian president isn't the type of politician to pay attention to international outrage. But he does care about profit. And that's where we in the UK can have a real impact. We can do our bit to stop the Amazon fires that threaten the rainforest, the local and Indigenous People who call it home, and the climate upon which we all depend.

Call on the UK government to suspend any talks with Brazil on trade until the Amazon rainforest and its people are protected. The more people who sign, the more pressure the government will come under.
