Dear John,
“ Why don’t they just get in line? [[link removed]] ” The truth is, for most immigrants, there is no line.
Legal pathways to U.S. citizenship—through family, work, or humanitarian protections—are limited, complex, and prohibitively expensive for many. Some immigrants wait decades to become citizens, if the option is even available at all. Families, livelihoods, and the U.S. economy suffer as a result.
Change may seem impossible right now. But Citizenship Day reminds us of America’s long and complex history as a nation of immigrants—and offers a chance to look forward. With the right policies, we can ensure that everyone has a fair shot at building a life here.
