The second Trump administration has unleashed a wave of authoritarian fascism across the nation and empowered the Republican Party to fully embrace its disgust for our democracy and the rule of law.
This can be seen clearly in the pivotal battleground state of Wisconsin, where Governor Tony Evers has been forced to SUE state Republicans for ignoring a recent state Supreme Court decision. Ignoring the state Supreme Court is a line we’d never thought the Republicans would cross, and it represents a terrifying escalation that we cannot afford to ignore.
Governor Evers has chosen not to run for re-election in 2026, and it’s vital that we elect a leader with the drive and the determination to fight back and resist the GOP’s efforts to tear down our democracy at every turn — a leader like Francesca Hong, who just announced she is running to replace Gov Evers.
Hong made history as the first Asian-American elected to the state legislature, and wasted no time in directly confronting the GOP and their undemocratic policies, helping build a coalition of civic groups and legal teams to stop the Republican Party’s outrageous gerrymanders of Wisconsin. “For them, democracy is not the people choosing their electeds but the electeds choosing who votes for them,” says Hong.
Since taking office, she’s been a progressive champion and a key player in the legislature’s historic run of delivering *huge* wins for working families. She helped write legislation to ensure healthy school meals for every single student, co-authoring the Economic Justice Bill of Rights, and fought to keep public dollars in public schools and stop the creeping onset of privatization. More recently, she’s introduced the Keep Families Together bill to stop Trump’s deportation goons from tearing more families apart.
But just as important as her legislative record is her ability to connect with working voters and WIN. A single mother and the daughter of immigrants, Hong worked in the restaurant industry for over a decade, becoming a chef, small business owner, and community organizer. She knows what it’s like to live paycheck to paycheck, fight for childcare, and make tough decisions at the grocery store.
It’s vital that we have a candidate who can win, because we absolutely cannot afford to lose the Wisconsin governorship. One of the most heavily contested battleground states in the country, we know that the GOP is salivating at the thought of being able to sabotage state election infrastructure, pass voter restrictions, and install their partisan loyalists at every level of power. It is not hyperbolic to say that the future of American democracy could hinge on winning this race.
