Friends,
I love our Constitution. I’ve sworn an oath to protect and defend it many times in my life – when I served in the Navy, at the Justice Department, in the White House, and on January 3 of this year when I began my job as your Congresswoman.
I am proudly and faithfully bound by oath to support our Constitution – not as a Democrat or as a Republican, but as a proud American.
In my job, I carry our Constitution with me everywhere I go. And today, I’m remembering that it was exactly 238 years ago that the drafters of our Constitution finished 115 days of around-the-clock work in Philadelphia. One of the drafters, Dr. Ben Franklin, was asked that day: “Well, Doctor, what have we got – a republic or a monarchy?” His reply was simple: “A republic … if you can keep it.”
The truths that animate our Constitution are self-evident, but nothing about keeping our republic has ever been inevitable. The only keepers of our Constitution are “We the People” – the first three immortal words of the document.
To keep up to date with my work, bringing your voice and our Constitution to the table in the United States Congress, I hope you’ll sign up for updates from me here:
