Mike Dombeck was the Chief of the U.S. Forest Service in 2001 when the Roadless Rule was created. He has spoken about why they created the rule in the first place, and I think his words help underscore what is at risk: |
In the 1980s, we lost about 1.4 million acres a year of open space, farmland, forest land, to development, from airports to shopping malls, you name it. By the 1990s, we were losing 3.2 million acres a year to development, and so the bottom line is we're losing this precious wild land, this backcountry land, to development.
We've got to protect what little we have. |
