Tell the FCC: Keep Families Connected

As the air turns crisp, back-to-school season is in full swing. At a time when school supplies are already more expensive than ever, there’s one more piece that you might not think about at first: High-speed internet access is now a fundamental part of modern education.

In February 2024, the Biden-era FCC expanded access to billions of dollars in federal funding to ensure that schools and libraries across the country would have reliable and affordable broadband. Hotspots and Wi-Fi-enabled school buses give students a chance to do their homework, give adults access to job training and can even provide emergency connectivity when weather takes down wires.

The Trump FCC — with the support of Sen. Ted Cruz — recently announced a plan to eliminate this program,¹ cutting off access just as the new school year kicks off. Since Carr became the FCC chairman, he’s attacked independent journalists, public media and any viewpoint that our authoritarian president dislikes … but going after kids? Utterly ghoulish.

I’ve worked at Free Press long enough to observe a range of approaches and leadership styles at the FCC — but I’ve never seen this much disdain for the people the agency is supposed to serve. This proposal is a complete reversal of the agency’s central mission.
