Friend, today I ordered the immediate removal of all of Richmond's Confederate statues. Just minutes ago, Stonewall Jackson was removed from his pedestal.
Richmond is no longer the capital of the Confederacy. Our city is full of diversity and love for all – and we need to demonstrate that. It's time for our city to get rid of these symbols of racism and oppression so we can move forward and heal.
Failure to remove the statues also presents a severe, immediate threat to public safety. Protestors could harm themselves attempting to remove the statues on their own, while also putting themselves, and others, at risk of COVID-19.
I understand that removing symbols of a bygone era won't undo the centuries of white supremacy and systemic racism that have plagued our city and our nation. But it's an important step forward.
I also understand that our work isn't done. We have a lot more to do to build a more equitable city, and I will continue working with my fellow Richmonders to do just that.

Thank you to the thousands of Richmonders and folks all across Virginia who demanded our city remove these statues. I'm proud of our great city for being an example of progress in these historic times.
Thank you,
Levar
