Political trends come and go, but for Donald Trump, election subversion is forever.
This summer, a compliant media assured us that Trump’s signature legislative achievement — the budget reconciliation bill — would unlock the midterm electorate for the GOP. That narrative collapsed before the bill even passed, as voters grew increasingly angry about rising costs, a struggling economy and fears of losing access to healthcare.
With the release of the Epstein Files further eroding his support, Trump turned to the one constant in his political career: undermining free and fair elections. Specifically, he launched a full-court press on Republican state officials to redraw new, aggressively gerrymandered congressional maps.
What began with Texas adding five more Republican seats has spread to several other states. Even worse, if the courts — including the Supreme Court — fail to take the existential threat this poses to American democracy seriously, it could spread further.
