Each year, National Physician Suicide Awareness Day is observed on September 17. On this day, we honor those physicians who have died by suicide, and dedicate ourselves to confronting and raising awareness about the high rates of suicide within the medical profession.
While suicide is the 11th leading cause of death overall in the United States, certain professionals such as physicians experience higher rates of suicide than the general population. In addition, nearly half of health workers report often feeling burned out. While these facts are alarming, we also know from scientific research that suicide can often be prevented.
