There's one thing I want you to walk away with knowing after reading this
email…

I stand with the American Worker.

My wife & I came from middle-class families & by God's grace built everything
from scratch.

Thinking back to when I wore this name tag—not as a young man, but as a grown
adult with a wife & kids to support—is humbling.

Some years ago, I left a high-paying job at a Houston law firm to clerk on
the Texas Supreme Court in Austin. Clerkships are prestigious judicial
apprenticeships for lawyers, but they come with a steep pay cut. In my case, it
was about 80%.

At home, I had a homemaking wife and two small children (now four!). We had a
little savings, but it wouldn't last forever. No family money to lean on. No
assets to sell. No trusts to draw from.Just responsibility.

The choice was clear: either put our kids in daycare so my wife could work,
or I'd find a second job. For us, the first option wasn't right. So I picked
the second.

That's how I ended up walking into the HEB at Burnet and Allandale in Austin,
a half mile down the road. I went in there and asked if they needed night shift
workers.

They did.

So I started stocking groceries after putting my babies to bed (usually from
around 9pm to 2am) and then waking up to head into the court in a suit and tie.

I did it for eight months, and I was happy to do it for my family.

I'll be honest. At first, I felt embarrassed. I was a Marine officer,
Afghanistan vet, graduate of a top law school, now clerking for the state's
highest court. What would people think if they saw me working nights at a
grocery store?

But I soon realized the guys working beside me were just like me: men trying
to make ends meet for their families.

I learned something important: there is nothing dishonorable or embarrassing
about hard work.It is never beneath you to do what it takes to provide for your
loved ones. In fact, it's one of the highest callings we have.

I remember those long nights of stocking shelves. And I remember the men and
women across this country who still do that today, often while juggling two or
three jobs just to make it.

I will always fight for the people who place their trust in me. Life's not
easy. It comes with twists and turns which can almost stretch a person to their
limit.

Texas needs an Attorney General who's fought in the trenches, figuratively
and literally. I don't come from money, and I've always done right by my
country and my family.
