A Note from the Desk of Congresswoman Julia Letlow

September has been a busy month in Congress, and one of our most essential responsibilities this month is to ensure the federal government remains funded and open beyond the September 30 deadline. On the Appropriations Committee, we are working diligently to ensure the federal government is accountable to taxpayers through both responsible investments and cuts to wasteful spending.

As negotiations continue, I remain committed to supporting a solution that avoids a shutdown, protects critical services, and reflects the values of Louisiana’s Fifth District. We owe it to the American people to keep their government open, transparent, and accountable to taxpayers.

Please feel free to always reach out to my office directly when you have questions, comments, or concerns. Our team is always accessible through our website by clicking here. We are here to serve you!

Sincerely,

Remembering 9/11

September 11th marked twenty-four years since the horrific terrorist attacks that forever changed the course of our nation and the world. We paused to honor the innocent lives lost and to remember the heroic sacrifices made on that tragic day in American history. On one of our nation’s darkest days, we witnessed resilience and unity as first responders and everyday Americans displayed extraordinary courage.

Let us never forget the selflessness of those who ran toward danger, knowing the risks they faced. Their bravery continues to inspire us. May the memory of this day live on for generations, and may God continue to watch over the brave men and women who serve and protect our nation.

Supporting Public Safety

While back home in Louisiana, I appeared on Fox News to discuss solutions to combating crime and illegal immigration. I am proud that Louisiana is leading the way in cracking down on illegal immigration and helping fulfill President Trump’s promise to Make America Safe Again. As a mother of two young children, I know firsthand that every parent breathes easier when the worst criminals are taken off our streets. Thanks to the Big Beautiful Bill, we secured $45 billion to expand detention capacity, including more than 400 new beds in Louisiana to hold illegal aliens before they are returned to their countries of origin.

This same commitment to safety must extend beyond immigration enforcement. Our communities deserve to feel secure wherever they live, which is why I welcome a stronger National Guard presence in cities like New Orleans, an incredible city rich in culture that urgently needs help fighting crime and improving public safety. Visiting with State Superintendent Cade Brumley

It was an honor to welcome Louisiana State Superintendent Cade Brumley to our office ahead of his testimony before the Education and Workforce Committee. Under his leadership, Louisiana has made tremendous strides in strengthening education and putting students first. Superintendent Brumley highlighted the success of the ‘Let Teachers Teach’ initiative, which is empowering educators and improving classroom learning across our state. After parents, teachers are the most important influence on a child’s academic success, and I am grateful for Superintendent Brumley’s dedication to ensuring Louisiana’s students and teachers have the tools they need to thrive.

Fighting for a Responsible Spending

As the September 30 funding deadline approaches, I’m working to keep the government open and serving the American people. Through the Appropriations Committee, we are working in a transparent manner to pass individual budget bills that invest in critical priorities while cutting wasteful Washington spending.

We must keep the government functioning for the American people while restoring fiscal discipline. That means prioritizing essential responsibilities like national defense, veterans’ care, and border security - but also cutting spending that does not serve taxpayers well. Families and small businesses across Louisiana expect their government to be accountable, transparent, and disciplined with taxpayer dollars, and that is precisely what I am fighting for.

Fighting for Louisiana Farmers

This Summer I introduced legislation to support American agricultural producers impacted by global trade disruptions. This bill would create a dedicated fund, administered by the Secretary of Agriculture, to ensure farmers receive timely and targeted relief when unfair trade practices harm their livelihoods. By directing revenue collected from tariffs on foreign agricultural products back to our producers, we can help offset losses from decreased exports, higher input costs, and foreign trade barriers. Amid the current uncertainty many farmers face, I am fighting for solutions to empower those who grow our nation’s food supply while President Trump negotiates better trade deals with other countries.
