John,
The very same people who have been trying for decades to privatize Social Security have their sights on another prize: The National Weather Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Between the two of them is a treasure trove of data that we every day. From the weather reports on your phone to the forecasts airlines use to chart their routs, this knowledge is a public good. But Donald Trump’s cronies want to put a paywall in front of hurricane forecasts.
Send a message to Congress now: Tell your representatives that they must do everything in their power to protect the National Weather Service.
Privatization schemes―whether they’re targeting the weather, the post office, Medicare, or Social Security, are just another way for a greedy corporation to charge us more for worse service, and pocket a profit in the process.
For every claim that private corporations can do more than public programs, we should look at the facts. Medicare’s administration costs are far less than private health insurers, and Social Security spends less than one percent of its budget on administration, while private pensions often spend 15%!
Generations of Americans built systems for all of us―not for greedy gatekeepers. This is all part of how America transforms into an oligarchy. We need to stop it.
Tell Congress: Protect the National Weather Service and NOAA from privatization!
Thank you,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
