Hi friend,
Happy National Postal Workers Day! The most important thing that we can do to celebrate today is support the essential postal workers who work so hard to keep communities across our nation connected.
The ongoing COVID-19 crisis has devastated our economy and led to a huge decline in mail being shipped across the country, and now,
the future of the United States Postal Service is in jeopardy.
As the crisis continues, millions across our nation are relying on USPS to fight COVID and participate in our democracy. This year, the Postal Service is critically essential to the delivery of medical supplies, participation in the census, and allowing the exercise of our fundamental rights to vote through vote-by-mail. But thousands of postal workers could lose their jobs in September if Congress doesn't act and the civil rights of communities across the nation could be at risk.
The United States Postal Service is so important to communities — especially communities of color, Indigenious communities, people with disabilities, and rural communities — because:
- Of all the federal agencies, the workforce of USPS is the most reflective of the racial and gender diversity of our nation and the agency is an important employer of workers of color.
- Postal workers are delivering masks, respirators, test kits, and other critical medical supplies to the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis.
- USPS is accessible and affordable which ensures tribal communities, rural communities, seniors, and people with disabilities, who might not otherwise be able to afford the cost of a private delivery business, are able to access the essential medications and daily necessities they need.
- The USPS is essential to having a fair and accurate 2020 Census that all people in the United States are able to participate in.
- The USPS is critical to ensure that voters are able to access mail-in and absentee ballots as the COVID-19 crisis continues.
To put it simply friend, postal workers are the backbone of our communities and we might fight alongside them now to protect the Postal Service.
